Misty Upham, who was nominated for an Indie Spirit Award in 2009 for her role in the feature film Frozen River, was found dead in the woods in Auburn, WA, today after going missing earlier this month. She was 32. Filmmaker friend Tracy Rector, speaking on behalf of the family, confirmed that the Native American actress was found by a search party led by uncle Robert Upham. She was later identified by family members. “The main thing her family wants people to know is that the Auburn Police Department would not cooperate in looking for Misty,” Rector told Deadline. “There’s a long history of police harassment and friction between the police and the Muckleshoot community here, and her family feels they dropped the ball and Misty perhaps would have been found if the police had taken it seriously.”

On Asian “accents”

traumachu:

It started when I was in kindergarten, and I was so proud I did not have to go to Bingo class, unlike my friends, because I could speak good English -

although I had no idea what a yellow dog that could spell had anything to do with Chinese.

(I figure out now that it was probably called Bilingual class)

I am lucky. I speak the fluent, accentless English of newscasters, the dialect spoken by the children of immigrants, that we learned not from our parents but rather from watching Sesame Street and other things on tv.

Last year, a white facebook friend of mine posted, “In order to celebrate Chinese New Year, me talk rike chinese man arr day.”

And then told me that she was “sorry I was offended” and “she didn’t mean anything by it” when I (nicely, sweetly) told her that that shit was not okay. She said that she saw it the same as doing an accent, like Irish. Or British. Or Italian. (for bonus points, she even said that she has lots of Asian co-workers and friends, and LOVES Asian people, and so is not a racist.)

And when one of my white friends gets drunk, he thinks his “Asian accent” is hilarious.

And I was told by a coworker about the time my Asian coworker mispronounced “Barroway” as “Bwawwoway” and how hilarious it was.

Here’s the thing - can you guess how many Asian people I know who actually say

me rikey

me from _____

me so solly

(or, if you like, the fetishized versions: me so horny, me love you long time)

if you said ZERO, then ding ding ding! Congratulations, you have working brain cells.

No, my misguided fb friend, the “Asian accent” is not an actual imitation of an accent, comparable to your bad British/Irish/Italian - but rather a mockery of Asian people and their supposed inability to speak English. It is the perpetuation of the image of Asian people as perpetual foreigners in America.

Like that time when my family was at an Italian restaurant, and we were speaking to my father in Cantonese, and a drunken white lady said very loudly, “GOD when you come to this country at least learn the language!”

Or when my father was pulled over for speeding, and although he said “what’s the problem, officer?” the first thing the state trooper said was, “Do you speak English?”

Your fake “Asian accents” are not harmless and silly, because at the root of the joke, it says - you, you are stupid. You cannot speak English. You are Other. You do not belong.

my parents have been in this country for 30 years. They have been American citizens for 30 years.

And they are very self-conscious of their imperfect English, afraid that it makes them look ignorant, knowing that it marks them as immigrants. That, after 30 years, you can still be told (in not so many words) that you do not belong.

The Cultural Revolution started in China when my father was 13. He was pulled out of school and, later, sent to work in the fields. (He escaped to Hong Kong when he was 18, but that is another story for another time.)

When my father came to this country, he had a middle school education and did not speak a lick of English. He worked as a busboy at a Chinese restaurant, the evening shift that ran until 3 or 4 in the morning, and went to school during the day.

It took my father ten years to earn his bachelor’s degree. He is now an engineer.

Is this not your “American Dream?”

When my mother came to this country, she spoke very little English. She got a job as an entry level clerk. Over the years she earned one promotion after another. She is now management at a large federal agency, and manages funds for the whole state.

Is this not your “American Dream?”

And my father didn’t understand why his coworkers said, “flied lice, flied lice!” to him over and over and laughed.

And my father is still afraid to speak in a professional setting, even when he has ideas.

And my mother still checks and double checks her professional e-mails with me, for fear of mockery from the same people she manages.

And people don’t understand why I can’t take a harmless joke. Why I don’t think that shit is funny.

No, I don’t “rikey.”

No, I won’t “love you long time.”

And no, I’m not sorry.

So, please, kindly - FUCK OFF.

why do the teenage mutant ninja turtles wear eye masks? they’re fucking humanoid turtles. who the fuck is going to see them without the eye masks and be like, oh you’re probably some other sentient humanoid turtles not the ones that fight crime.

#holy shit this just fucking blew my mind#and I get it’s so we can tell them apart#but until this moment I had always just automatically assumed it was to conceal their fucking turtle secret identities (via prairie-grass)

it is NOT to tell them apart because in the original comics iirc they all wore matching red masks

Powerful photos capture the student protests in Mexico barely anyone is talking about

While the world has focused its attention on the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, there’s another student movement gaining steam on the other side of the world.

The unfolding protests gripping Mexico began in the small town of Iguala, in the southwest region of Guerrero state, where the disappearance of 43 student teachers on the night of Sept. 26 has sparked outrage amid allegations of collaboration between local police and organized crime.

Alright, so, here’s the deal.
See the person in the lower right hand corner? That’s the woman that did the post on Southern Linguistics. She’s also my mom, and we recorded it on a lark a year or so ago. But that’s not the point right now.
My family and I have a little soap company. Most of our employees are our family members, and a few others beside. We travel to conventions, we sell soap and candles (mostly fandom based things) and we quite enjoy doing so. We aren’t the richest company in the world, but we love what we do.
As of right now, we’re trying to crowdfund the money together so we can expand our ventures and full time hire a few more people. Now, normally, we’d ask our family for the help, since they’re willing to come together and split the amount between themselves.
but the problem is most of our relatives are kinda on the pro-Christian, anti-anything-other-than-straight-and-the-gender-they-were-born side of things, and would force us to fire anyone that wouldn’t mesh with their ideals before giving us the money. (You know, the one bad apple ruins the batch mentality and all).
And that would be 90% of our employees.
We want to keep making our products, and we want to keep everyone on board, but without getting even a fraction of the amount were asking, we would still have to let people go. My mother—the founder and CEO—is dead set against that; her attitude is, “you are who you are. You love who you love. You worship—or don’t worship—who and what you worship. Period.”
So here : This is the link to our IndieGoGo.
Even if you don’t donate, or don’t have the means to, please reblog and help get the word out; we already are taking a HUGE step of faith just putting ourselves out there, and we can’t do it alone.
Thank you for reading, and thanks in advance for sharing.

this is going around again so I’m reblogging it cuz  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

at this point I have literally received thousands of questions regarding what instrument I am playing. I am reblogging this so I never have to answer this question again in my life. It’s an omnichord y’all. Much like you, I stumbled across this instrument via an internet video, I fell in love immediately and saved what little I had to buy one, and master it. I have been without a functioning omnichord for almost a year. If you like this cover, please consider donating so I might be able to replace the instrument that helped save my life. I’d be indescribably grateful. I’ll honestly write songs for folks who contribute to my omnichord fund, anything really. Anyway, thanks for the support everyone. Most of you are kinda just in it for the omnichord but I really appreciate folks who are vibing with the total package <3
